World Bank Group General EHS Guidelines 1.3: 1.3 Wastewater and ambient water quality

Projects that discharge process wastewater, utility wastewater or stormwater, directly or indirectly, manage effluent so it meets the level of treatment justified by the discharge route (surface water, sanitary sewer or land), national and local standards and permit conditions, the assimilative capacity and intended use of the receiving water and sensitive habitats. They prevent contamination through segregation, pollution prevention and appropriate treatment technology run by trained staff, manage stormwater by first-flush treatment, oil-water separators and grease traps, dispose of residuals lawfully, control emissions and odours from treatment, protect workers in treatment operations, and monitor effluent at representative locations without diluting it to meet limits.
