Western Australia Work Health and Safety (General) Regulations 2022 529A-529CE: Crystalline silica substances: controlled processing, high risk assessment, silica risk control plan, training, monitoring and health monitoring

What does 529A-529CE require?

Chapter 8A, specific to Western Australia, applies to the processing of a crystalline silica substance (cutting, grinding, drilling, crushing and similar work on a substance containing crystalline silica). A business must ensure that the processing is controlled, using at least one of the listed measures (isolation of the person from dust, an enclosed operator cabin with high efficiency filtration, wet suppression, on-tool extraction or a dust extraction and ventilation system) together with the hierarchy of controls, must assess whether each processing task is high risk having regard to the form and proportion of silica, the hazards, frequency and duration of exposure and the likely airborne concentration, and for high risk processing must prepare and comply with a silica risk control plan before work starts, give workers the required training, carry out air monitoring for respirable crystalline silica and provide health monitoring, and keep the records the Chapter requires.
