An employer must have every employee doing ongoing asbestos-related activities examined by a registered medical practitioner where there is a risk of exposure above half the asbestos exposure standard, ignoring respiratory protection when judging that risk. If there is reasonable doubt about whether examinations are needed, the employer must provide atmospheric monitoring. Examinations must occur at intervals of no more than 2 years and within 30 days after the employee stops the activity, unless examined within the preceding year. The duty extends to independent contractors. Act compliance: ss 22(1) and 23.
