An employer or self-employed individual must not take asbestos-contaminated protective clothing away from a workplace unless it is either (a) sent for disposal as soon as reasonably possible, in a way that prevents airborne fibres being released, at a site authorised to accept asbestos waste under the Environment Protection Act 2017 (including its regulations); or (b) sent to a laundry equipped for asbestos-contaminated clothing, contained so fibres cannot escape, with the container decontaminated on the outside before it leaves the work area and marked as holding asbestos before transfer. This does not apply where the contamination comes from Division 7 removal work or Division 8 activities, which carry their own rules. Act compliance: ss 21, 23 and 24.
