An employer doing limited asbestos removal work must arrange appropriate medical examinations by a registered medical practitioner for every employee doing ongoing removal work where there is a risk of exposure above half the asbestos exposure standard; respirators are ignored when judging that risk. Examinations must occur before the employee first does removal work for that employer (unless examined in the preceding 2 years), at intervals of no more than 2 years, and within 30 days after the employee stops removal work (unless examined within the preceding year). The duty extends to independent contractors. Act compliance: ss 22(1) and 23.
