Storing asbestos is banned, with two exceptions. First, asbestos waste, or non-disposable protective clothing likely to be contaminated, may be held only while it awaits disposal (or laundering, for the clothing), is kept secure and marked to show asbestos is or may be present, is contained so no fibres can escape, and is sent for disposal (or laundering) as soon as reasonably possible. Second, asbestos that was fixed or installed on 31 December 2003 in a vehicle, aircraft, ship, building, structure or plant is not caught. The r 217 exclusions also apply. Penalty: 100 penalty units (natural person) or 400 penalty units (body corporate).
