Deputy HSRs are elected in the same manner as HSRs. When the HSR leaves office or cannot exercise the role because of absence or another reason, a deputy may exercise the HSR's powers, and the Act (apart from s 57) then applies to the deputy as it would to the HSR. The rules on term of office (s 55), disqualification (s 56) and the employer's training duty (s 67) apply to deputies in the same way. Employers must therefore recognise a deputy who is acting and meet the training obligation for deputies too.
