Refuse, recyclables and returnables are stored in receptacles or units that insects and rodents cannot reach. Storage areas, enclosures and receptacles are kept in good repair. Receptacles that are not rodent resistant, unprotected bags and bales containing food residue are not stored outside, though clean cardboard awaiting scheduled pickup may be stored so it causes no harbourage. Indoor receptacles with food residue are covered when not in continuous use or once full, and outdoor ones have tight-fitting lids or doors kept closed; drain plugs stay in place; refuse areas are kept clean and free of unnecessary items; and receptacles are cleaned often enough to prevent build-up and pest attraction, without contaminating food or clean items, with wastewater disposed of as sewage.
