An instructor teaches only through an approved training school and only the subjects in the course outline the school submitted and the State Fire Marshal's Office approved. A training school uses only approved instructors, obtains approval of each residential fire alarm technician course outline before teaching it, may not be a registered firm or an affiliate of one, may not train for the residential technician licence without the marshal's approval (which is tied to the responsible entity named on the approval application and is not transferable), and each calendar year runs at least two public classes within 125 miles of every county with more than 500,000 people. General instruction not aimed at satisfying a licence requirement needs no approval. The residential fire alarm technician course runs at least seven hours on installing, servicing and maintaining one- and two-family residential systems as NFPA 72 defines them, including an hour on Insurance Code chapter 6002 and the fire alarm rules, an hour on NFPA 70, and the further minimum allocations the section lists.
