Chapter 4: Ensuring AI ethics and reliability (duties on AI business operators) – South Korea AI Basic Act

South Korea AI Basic Act 28: Private autonomous AI ethics committee (voluntary)

What does 28 require?

An AI business operator, like a research or educational institution with AI researchers, may set up its own autonomous AI ethics committee to keep to the ethics principles. The committee works independently to secure compliance with the ethics principles in AI research, development and use; to investigate and research the safety of that work and the prevention of human rights violations; to examine and supervise the procedures and results of AI research, development and use; to train the organisation's researchers and staff in the ethics principles; and to prepare field-specific AI ethics guidelines. The organisation decides the committee's composition and operation itself, but it must not consist of one gender only and must include people with the experience and knowledge to judge social and ethical validity and people from outside the organisation; the Minister may issue standard guidelines on fair and neutral composition and operation.
