Subpart CC: Cranes and Derricks in Construction – OSHA Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (29 CFR Part 1926)

OSHA Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (29 CFR Part 1926) 1926.1440: 1926.1440 Sideboom cranes

The subpart applies to sideboom cranes except the ground conditions section (1926.1402), safety devices (1926.1415), operational aids (1926.1416) and operator qualification and certification (1926.1427). The free fall section 1926.1426 applies except the pre-October 31, 1984 allowance in (a)(2)(i); instead, live-boom sideboom cranes are permitted only if manufactured before November 8, 2010. Sideboom cranes mounted on crawler or wheel tractors must satisfy listed ASME B30.14-2004 provisions: load ratings, tractor travel, ropes and reeving accessories, booms, exhaust gases, stabilizers on wheel-type tractors, welded construction, clutch and brake protection, the rated load test (only for altered or modified equipment), operator qualifications in 14-3.1.2(a) without the words limiting it to when required by law, specified operating practices in 14-3.1.3, and paragraphs (j), (l) and (m) of 14-3.2.3 on moving the load. Operators still need training on safe operation under 1926.1430(c)(2).
