Whenever equipment or its attachments are put together or taken apart, the employer must obey every applicable manufacturer prohibition and then follow one of two routes. The first is the manufacturer's own assembly and disassembly procedures. The second is the employer's procedures, which are allowed only where the employer is able to show that they satisfy 1926.1406, meaning they prevent unintended dangerous movement and collapse, give adequate support and stability, and position workers to minimise exposure, and were developed by a qualified person. A note ties this to rigging: where synthetic slings are used in assembly or disassembly rigging, the manufacturer's procedures for those slings must be followed (see 1926.1404(r)). Choice of route does not relieve the employer of manufacturer prohibitions, which apply under either route.
