Any lift in which two or more cranes or derricks will carry the load must be planned in advance. A qualified person prepares the plan, which is designed so the subpart's requirements are satisfied, and if that qualified person decides engineering expertise is required, the employer must supply it. A lift director runs the operation: either one individual who is both competent and qualified, or a competent person with the help of at least one qualified person. The lift director goes over the plan in a meeting with every worker who will take part. Operators-in-training may not take part in multiple-equipment lifts unless certified (see 1926.1427(b)(3)).
