Maintenance, inspection and repair personnel may run covered equipment only when two conditions are both met. First, what they operate is limited to the functions they need to carry out maintenance, to examine the machine or to check how it performs, not production lifting. Second, they either work directly supervised by an operator who satisfies 1926.1427, or they know the operation, limits, characteristics and hazards of that type of equipment. Separately, maintenance and repair staff must qualify as qualified persons for the equipment involved and for the maintenance or repair tasks they do.
