Swing radius hazards: where reachable areas exist in which the rotating superstructure (permanent or temporary) could foreseeably strike a worker or pinch or crush one against another object or another part of the machine, the employer must keep employees out of those zones. Authorized personnel (employees whose assignment puts them on or near the machine) must be trained to recognise struck-by and pinch/crush areas created by the rotating superstructure, and the zone boundaries must be marked with barriers (control or warning lines, railings or the like) that are put up and kept in place. If barriers are shown to be infeasible both on the ground and on the equipment, the areas must instead be marked with warning signs, for example DANGER SWING/CRUSH ZONE, combined with high-visibility markings on the equipment, and employees trained on what the markings mean. Before an employee enters a part of the hazard area out of the operator's sight, the operator must be told, either by that employee or by someone the employee asks to do so; an operator who knows someone went there must not rotate the superstructure until informed, through a pre-arranged communication system, that the person is safe. If any part of a crane or derrick sits inside another's working radius, the controlling entity sets up a system that coordinates the operations. With no controlling entity, the single employer operating the multiple machines, or the several employers, must set up that system.
