Subpart CC: Cranes and Derricks in Construction – OSHA Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (29 CFR Part 1926)

OSHA Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (29 CFR Part 1926) 1926.1421: 1926.1421 Signals, voice signals, additional requirements

Before operations begin, the operator, the signal person and any lift director must get in touch and settle which voice signals will be used. Once agreed, they need not meet again on the topic unless a worker is added or substituted, confusion arises about the signals, or a signal is to be changed. Every voice signal must carry three elements in this order: the function (hoist, boom and so on) and direction; the distance and/or speed; and the function followed by the stop command. The operator, signal person and any lift director must all be able to communicate effectively in the language being used.
