Unless another provision says otherwise, every covered crane must carry these safety devices. A crane level indicator, built in or available on the machine; a malfunctioning built-in unit is tagged out or removed and a faulty removable one is removed; not required on portal cranes, derricks, floating cranes and derricks, or land cranes on barges and other floating supports. Boom stops, except on derricks and hydraulic booms. Jib stops when a jib is fitted, except on derricks. Locks on foot pedal brakes. An integral holding device or check valve on hydraulic outrigger and stabilizer jacks. Rail clamps and rail stops on rail-mounted equipment, except portal cranes. A horn, either built in or carried on the machine within the operator's immediate reach, with the same tag-out or removal rule for a faulty unit. Operations may not start unless all listed devices work properly. Should one fail mid-operation, the operator has to bring operations to a safe stop; the equipment is taken out of service and may not resume until the device works again (see 1926.1417). Unlike operational aids, no alternative measures are allowed for safety devices. Tower cranes follow their own list in 1926.1435(d) instead.
