Mechanical services and medical gas work may be done only by a qualified supervisor (holder of an endorsed contractor licence or supervisor certificate authorising it) or a tradesperson certificate holder authorised to do it under supervision and doing it under a qualified supervisor's supervision and directions. An apprentice or trainee may do it only with a qualified supervisor present at all times and available. Supervisors must give adequate directions and personally ensure correct work, and for apprentices and trainees must also be present and available and normally require detailed progress reports. Holders endorsed for overlapping plumbing and drainage, refrigeration or air-conditioning, roof plumbing or medical gas specialist work (and those under immediate supervision of such holders) may do that overlapping work. Registered medical practitioners and nurses commissioning, testing, verifying or witnessing a medical gas installation in their role are exempt. Maximum penalty 1,000 penalty units for a corporation and 200 otherwise. (A pending 2026 amendment omits the s 15A(5)(d) overlap.)
