Switchgear inspections and tests must not endanger operators or users. All switchgear and protection maintenance, including visual inspection, should be planned and should show original commissioning tests remain repeatable, checking damage, labels, instruments, environment and tidiness, following makers' manuals. HV switchgear and protection should be visually inspected at least every three months (transformers yearly), covering leaks, instruments, protection batteries, indicators, cable boxes, SF6 gauges, ventilation and fans, under a limitation-of-access document. Thermal imaging of all distribution and partial discharge testing of HV equipment (to BS EN 60270) should be considered.
