Portable appliances (excluding ME equipment, which is tested separately by specialists) should be under a testing regime (HSG107, IET code of practice). A policy should cover patients' and residents' own equipment, prohibiting use until tested or otherwise safeguarded and refusing faulty items; users should visually check equipment each time; non-medical items are not to enter the patient environment without clinical engineering advice. Estates should keep a comprehensive asset register of portable appliances whoever owns them (serial number, owner, test and frequency), label organisation-owned items, and store all test results (equipment, owner, number, test and results, date), ideally electronically; summary certificates are acceptable if full details are held.
