Cable routes should be protected; external primary cables direct-buried, under roads in ducts of at least 100 mm. Wiring should be supported so it does not collapse early in a fire and should not obstruct escape routes; penetrations of fire-rated construction should be fire-stopped to the same rating. HV cables should not run near flammable gases or piped oxygen and should carry 'DANGER 11,000 Volts' notices at access points; spare ducts should be left on main routes. Essential and non-essential wiring should be segregated as far as possible, and central battery emergency lighting circuits kept separate from both in fire-resistant cable. Prefabricated wiring in clinical areas needs risk assessment and maintenance access.
