Chapter 6: Transfer switches and protection – NFPA 111-2025 Standard on Stored Electrical Energy Emergency and Standby Power Systems

NFPA 111-2025 Standard on Stored Electrical Energy Emergency and Standby Power Systems 6.3: 6.3 Load switching and load shedding

When connected load exceeds ECE capacity, controls must automatically drop pre-identified noncritical loads or transfer to bypass. Transfer switches carry continuous and interrupting ratings for all load classes and withstand available fault current. Highest priority loads go to the emergency bus first, lower priorities follow while the bus is not overloaded; if a power module drops out and the rest cannot carry the load, loads are shed in reverse priority in proportion to the lost capacity, stopping once demand matches remaining capacity.
