Japan Act on Specified Commercial Transactions (Act No. 57 of 1976) Art.12: Art. 12 No exaggerated or misleading mail-order advertising

In mail-order advertising the seller must not make statements markedly contrary to fact, or that mislead people into thinking the offer much better or more advantageous than it is, about the performance of goods or content of rights or services, the withdrawal and cancellation terms (including any special return term) and the ordinance matters (Regulation Article 26: kind, performance, quality, efficacy or effect; involvement of the State, local governments, the mail-order association or famous organisations or persons; origin, trademark or manufacturer; and the Article 11 items). The minister may require reasonable grounds within a set period (Article 12-2); failing that, the advertising is deemed exaggerated. Breach is punishable by a fine of up to JPY 1 million (Article 72).
