The governing body should make sure stakeholders are identified and ranked, suitably engaged and consulted, and that what they expect is understood, so that relationships work and sound decisions are taken on those expectations in pursuit of the value generation objectives. Where it groups stakeholders, it should state the criteria it uses to group them and to judge their relevance, and design an engagement process on that basis. It should take into account the expectations of relevant groups, whether it is bound to (member stakeholders, regulators) or chooses to (reference stakeholders). It should also make sure that relevant stakeholders take part in achieving the purpose through the strategy, that the culture responds to their views, that cooperative relationships are kept up, that human and labour rights are upheld in every country where it operates, that an open, transparent culture of communication connects different groups and perspectives (gender, age, belief systems, cognitive abilities), and that reporting hangs together so stakeholders can judge the governance arrangements (6.5.3).
