ISO 37000:2021 6.11.1: 6.11.1 Principle

The governing body should make sure the organization stays viable and keeps performing over the long term while leaving present and future generations able to meet their own needs. That depends on natural environmental, social and economic systems being resilient; the organization can affect them for better or worse, directly or without intending to (for example climatic stability, biodiversity and social equality), and an organization that does not grasp and respond to what the systems around it need is unlikely to last. The governing body should make sure the interactions and dependencies of the value generation model are described as a connected whole, that the system relationships it rests on are identified and evaluated, and that it governs with long-term viability in mind (ISO 14001 is the referenced source).
