In addition to core design skills, a designer should know WHS legislation, codes of practice and other regulatory requirements; understand the intended purpose of the structure; know risk management processes and technical design standards; appreciate construction methods and their effect on design; and be able to source and apply data on human dimensions, capacities and behaviours. Large and complex projects often need specialists such as ergonomists, engineers and occupational hygienists in the design team or consulted to fill gaps.
