Designers should consider the effect of the design on the health and safety of everyone who interacts with the structure throughout its life, and the WHS Act (s 22) requires design so that it is without risk to those using it, constructing it, carrying out reasonably foreseeable activities including proper demolition or disposal, and those nearby. That means finding design solutions for foreseeable hazards as the structure is built, commissioned, used, maintained, repaired, refurbished, modified, decommissioned, demolished or dismantled and disposed of or recycled. For example a building with a lift should have enough space and safe access to the lift well or machine room for maintenance.
