A principal contractor is required for a construction project where the construction work costs $250,000 or more (the figure printed in the code; WHS Regulation 293). It is the client or a PCBU engaged by the client who is authorised to manage or control the workplace, and it must ensure construction is planned and managed to eliminate or minimise risks so far as reasonably practicable. Detailed guidance is in the model Code of Practice: Construction work.
