Chapter 3, SDS sections 4 to 8: first aid, firefighting, accidental release, handling and storage, exposure controls – Australia Model Code of Practice: Preparation of Safety Data Sheets for Hazardous Chemicals

Australia Model Code of Practice: Preparation of Safety Data Sheets for Hazardous Chemicals s6: Section 6: give spill and release advice covering personal protection, ignition control, evacuation, environmental precautions and containment and clean-up methods, distinguishing large and small spills

What does s6 require?

Section 6 should explain how to respond to spills, leaks and other releases so that harm to people, property and the environment is prevented or minimised, distinguishing large and small spills where size changes the hazard or response. It should advise on suitable equipment and PPE to prevent contact with skin, eyes and clothing; removing ignition sources and ventilating; emergency procedures such as evacuating or consulting an expert; environmental precautions such as keeping the material out of drains and surface or ground water; containment (bunding, drain covers, capping); and clean-up (neutralisation, decontamination, absorbents, cleaning or vacuuming, and non-sparking tools where relevant), consistent with the disposal advice in Section 13.
