Chapter 3, SDS sections 4 to 8: first aid, firefighting, accidental release, handling and storage, exposure controls – Australia Model Code of Practice: Preparation of Safety Data Sheets for Hazardous Chemicals

Australia Model Code of Practice: Preparation of Safety Data Sheets for Hazardous Chemicals s4: Section 4: give first aid instructions for each exposure route, the main immediate and delayed symptoms, when medical attention is needed, and any antidotes, facilities and first aider protection

What does s4 require?

Section 4 should describe the initial care (without sophisticated equipment or a wide range of medicines) for a person affected, state whether medical attention is needed and how urgently, give immediate effects and treatment by route of exposure, and cover possible delayed effects and any health monitoring. Sub-headings should be used for each route: breathing in, skin, eyes and swallowing. It should say when immediate medical attention is needed, when known antidotes should be available for trained (and where required authorised) people to give, when delayed effects are expected, when moving the person to fresh air or removing clothing and shoes is advised, when first aiders need PPE, and when first aiders may be at risk from a person who swallowed the chemical (for example organophosphates). Needed workplace facilities such as safety showers or eyewash should be named, along with the most important acute, delayed and aggravated symptoms and, where relevant, clinical testing, medical monitoring, antidote details and contraindications.
