Section 3: Facilities – Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Work Environment and Facilities

Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Work Environment and Facilities 3.8: 3.8 Provide showers and drying facilities for dirty, hot or hazardous work

Where work is dirty, hot or hazardous, showering and drying facilities may be needed, for example in mining, firefighting, health care, abattoirs, foundry work, welding, and police search and rescue. At least one shower cubicle per 10 workers who may need to shower, usually separate for men and women, though one unisex shower may be acceptable in a small or temporary workplace where privacy is assured and psychosocial risks managed. Showers should have at least 1.8 square metres of floor, a slip-resistant sanitisable surface, partitions at least 1650 mm high and no more than 300 mm above the floor, an adjoining dressing area with a seat and hooks, and a lockable door, with hot and cold water, individual non-irritating soap or other cleaner, brushes where grime does not wash off, and drying facilities such as towels where decontamination is needed, for example after asbestos or lead work. Remote or temporary sites may need portable showers to the same standard.
