Section 3: Facilities – Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Work Environment and Facilities

Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Work Environment and Facilities 3.3a: 3.3 Provide clean toilets to all workers while at work, in adequate number

Clean toilets must be provided for all workers while at work, and where reasonably practicable the workplace should provide toilets rather than rely on external public toilets. In buildings, the National Construction Code sets ratios and specifications. Separate facilities should generally serve male and female workers, though a single unisex facility may serve a workplace of 10 or fewer people with two or fewer of one sex if separated by walls, partitions and doors for privacy, with a closet pan, washbasin and means to dispose of sanitary items. Otherwise the minimum ratios are one closet pan per 20 males, one urinal per 25 males and one closet pan per 15 females. Break scheduling may need more, and psychosocial risks including sexual or gender-based harassment must be managed.
