Section 1: Introduction, duty holders and when to manage risk – Australia Model Code of Practice: How to Manage Work Health and Safety Risks

Australia Model Code of Practice: How to Manage Work Health and Safety Risks 1.2f: 1.2 Consult, cooperate and coordinate with other duty holders on shared risks

A PCBU must, so far as is reasonably practicable, consult, cooperate and coordinate activities with every other person who has a WHS duty for the same matter (WHS Act s 46). Where several businesses share a workplace or activity, each should exchange information about who is doing what and work together so that risks are eliminated or minimised. A PCBU that uses labour hire shares the duty of care with the provider and must discuss hazards and precautions with it. Safety requirements and policies should be communicated when contracts are made, the job reviewed and issues discussed. A PCBU cannot transfer its responsibilities, and should never assume someone else is managing a matter.
