The PCBU must manage risks of remote or isolated work, including a system of work with effective communication with the worker (r 48). Factors: how long the worker is alone, time of day, the plant and tools used, high risk activities, whether help is needed, available communication, contact procedures, how remote the site is from rescue and emergency services, whether communication works everywhere, fatigue and job demands, site security, the worker's experience and training, and known medical conditions. Controls include mobile phones where coverage is confirmed and batteries charged, otherwise two-way radio, personal security systems, personal locator beacons or satellite phones, recording the site's GPS coordinates, layout and natural surveillance against harmful behaviour, buddy systems, movement records and call-in schedules, and training.
