Section 5: claims handling, investigations and decisions – Australia Life Insurance Code of Practice (CALI Life Code)

Australia Life Insurance Code of Practice (CALI Life Code) 5.53-5.58: Rehabilitation conditions, probate, provider report deadlines, two follow-ups before closure, reopening and the content of a decline

What does 5.53-5.58 require?

Where the policy allows, the claimant may be told that rehabilitation or retraining is required before a decision; on an accepted death claim the claimant is told if payment waits on probate or letters of administration. Providers asked for medical or financial reports have twenty business days, with delays reported to the claimant. Before closing a claim for missing information the insurer follows up the person it is waiting on at least twice by different methods. A closed or declined claim may be reopened or reassessed on request, with a fresh claim received date and no repeat of information or steps already held unless there are explained reasonable grounds. A decline is given in writing stating the reasons, summarising what information was relied on, explaining the medical link where the decline rests on a pre-existing condition, the right to copies of relied-on documents within ten business days (to the claimant or their doctor), the right to a review or to add information, and the complaints process.
