Section 5: claims handling, investigations and decisions – Australia Life Insurance Code of Practice (CALI Life Code)

Australia Life Insurance Code of Practice (CALI Life Code) 5.18-5.23: Independent medical examinations: choice of doctor, costs, frequency limit and twenty-day reports

A claimant asked to attend an independent medical examination is told they may ask for a list of doctors including, where practical, at least one of each gender; examiners meet the clause 1.20 standards; limited availability of the chosen examiner is flagged as a possible delay. The insurer pays the appointment (except an unexcused no-show), reports and agreed travel and out-of-pocket costs, which may include a support person. More than one examination by the same specialist type within six months is avoided where possible and otherwise explained. Examiners are asked to report within twenty business days; the claimant may have a copy, sent to them or their doctor, and is told of any delay.
