Australia Life Insurance Code of Practice (CALI Life Code) 4.12-4.14: Mental health conditions: no decline without the chance to explain, and manage risk by terms rather than refusal

What does 4.12-4.14 require?

An applicant who has, or has had, a mental health condition or its symptoms, is not declined before having the opportunity to describe the history, severity and type of condition, and those circumstances are weighed in the decision. Where such a condition is disclosed the insurer considers whether cover can be given by managing the extra risk through higher premiums, exclusions, limits or caps rather than refusing cover. Alternative terms are communicated within five business days with the reasons.
