Where an apprentice must attend block release training linked to the training contract and it requires staying overnight, the employer must pay the excess reasonable travel costs of getting to and from it. Those costs cover reasonable transport (including carrying tools where needed), accommodation while travelling where necessary, and reasonable travel expenses such as meals, beyond the travel and expenses allowance in clause 18.6. They do not include pay for travelling time, or expenses while not travelling to or from the training. The obligation does not apply if the apprentice could attend a nearer RTO and the employer has not agreed to the more distant one. The employer may reduce the amount by government apprentice travel assistance the apprentice is eligible for, but only if the apprentice has received it or the employer has told them in writing it is available.
