A casual employee's ordinary hours are the smaller of an average of 38 a week or the hours the employer requires. For every hour worked the employer must pay at least the ordinary hourly rate for the casual's classification in clause 16 plus a casual loading of 25%, which compensates for the absence of paid personal/carer's leave, annual leave, redundancy benefits, termination notice and the other features of permanent employment. The overtime clause (20) and the shift allowances clause (13.13) apply to casuals, at the casual rates written into those clauses.
