Where a State has apprentice legislation, that law operates unless it conflicts with the award, in which case the award prevails. Where State law allows, the employer may engage an apprentice on a training agreement that the relevant State or Territory apprenticeship authority has approved, provided its qualification outcome matches the one set for the trade in the endorsed industry training package. Trainee or indentured apprentices are to be employed in one of five trades: electrical, instrumentation, electronic/communications, refrigeration and air-conditioning, or cable jointing and power lines work.
