What does 25 require?

All passengers must be prepared to pay fares. A fare system must not demand actions from a person with disability beyond what is required of others. It must comply with clauses 5.1.3.1 (audio output of visual information), 5.1.3.3 (auditory output correlation) and 8.5 (tactile indication of speech mode) of AS EN 301 549 (2020), and any hardware and software the public uses must meet section 8 and section 11 of that standard respectively. Where a person's disability affects their use of the standard fare system, the operator or provider must give them another way of paying that costs no more, supports independent access and meets equivalent access principles. A fare system designed for people using mobility aids must sit next to the other systems and, where possible, be oriented to minimise glare on its screens; every fare system must offer forward reaches to clause 8.3.2 or side reaches to clause 8.3.3 of AS EN 301 549 (2020), which the operator or provider must maintain. Vending machines must comply with clauses 29.1 (height), 29.2 (controls) and 29.3 (illumination) of AS 1428.2 (1992), with circulation space in front allowing a wheelchair turn to clause 3.5 of AS 1428.1 (2021). The AS EN 301 549 duties apply to new conveyances and premises and fare system elements installed on or after 13 October 2026.
