Batteries and d.c. supplies present arc flash, shock, toxic fume, chemical, mechanical failure and fire hazards. Before working on or near them, or on equipment containing them, a risk assessment must set precautions including following the manufacturer's instructions, using insulated tools and wearing PPE suited to the available incident energy. Battery terminals must stay covered by insulating covers where practicable throughout work on or near them (AS/NZS 5139 gives guidance on battery installations).
