Work in or near hazardous areas (for example petrochemical sites, grain storage, flour mills) must use the safe work methods for those premises (AS/NZS 60079.14 gives guidance; competency rules may apply). Near vehicle or pedestrian traffic, traffic management with screens, barriers and signage must be used, lighting should be added where the risk assessment identifies it, and in passageways doors that could push someone into live equipment should be restrained. In areas of reduced mobility (around switchboards, ceiling and roof spaces, under floors, on ladders, scaffolds or EWPs, trenches, pits, tunnels and confined spaces) care is needed because escape is restricted (AS 2865 covers confined spaces). Work areas must have adequate and suitable lighting for the work and for evacuation, and lamps should be protected against breakage.
