Equipment strength and performance degrade with wear, adverse environments, poor maintenance and age (inspection in Section 9). Personal fall-arrest equipment carries permanent markings on purpose, use and limits under its manufacturing Standard, and permanent installations (anchor points, horizontal lines and rails) need signs describing them and how to use them (content in clauses 3.2.5 and 6.3(j)), firmly fixed near the item and durable and legible for the life of the installation; hazard signs must meet AS 1319 in Australia; equipment data and maintenance records are covered in clause 9.10. Equipment from one manufacturer must be combined only as its instructions allow, and where items from different manufacturers are combined each should be used to its maker's instructions and checked for compatibility, with advice from the manufacturers.
