AS/NZS 1891.4:2009 Industrial Fall-Arrest Systems and Devices - Selection, Use and Maintenance 2.2.1: 2.2.1 General requirements for safe use of fall-arrest equipment

For any work with fall-arrest equipment: anyone exposed to a fall has to stay attached to a fall-arrest system (one or more) the whole time; systems must be used to keep any fall as short as practicable, for example by taking up slack; equipment must be fitted and used to the manufacturer's instructions and handled carefully to avoid damage; users should check immediately before and after use that equipment is in good order and has been inspected, serviced and maintained under Section 9; defective equipment must not be used and must be destroyed or marked defective and repaired to the maker's instructions; users must check assembly before loading, especially that clothing is not caught in snap hooks or connectors preventing full gate closure; a system may only be used where there is enough fall clearance for it (Section 7); carried hand tools should be tethered so they do not hinder movement or the equipment; equipment must be stored after use per clause 9.8; equipment that has arrested a fall must be withdrawn and referred for inspection (clause 9.5); and where falling objects could injure people below, controls such as an exclusion zone or protective structure must be put in place.
