Specialist equipment may be needed in adverse environments: rain, wet or frozen surfaces, sand or dust and strong wind; chemicals; heat, sparks and flame; mechanical hazards such as power cutting tools and sharp edges; and flowing bulk materials such as silo grain. Where the risk assessment identifies these, the supplier or another competent person should help select equipment and advise precautions. Especially hazardous tasks include welding, power tools (particularly cutting tools), abrasives, chemicals that can damage equipment, electrical work, explosive or flammable atmospheres and confined spaces; for these, consider altered practices such as two separate lanyards, protective sleeves or covers, or special equipment designed for the hazard.
