If a person exposed to a fall on a slope can keep their footing without tensioning the lanyard or needing handholds, fall-arrest equipment on anchorages of matching strength must be used. Secure footing depends on the slope (slopes over 15 degrees should always be checked for fall risk), slipperiness and wet or oily conditions, trip hazards, carrying loads or using hand tools, weather (wind, snow, ice, frost) and footwear grip. Where secure footing needs lateral support, another means of access or support must be provided, for example a pole strap with harness, an AS 1657 walkway, or work positioning such as rope access to the AS/NZS ISO 22846 series (the reference updated in 2021).
