Equipment and anchorages used for restraint technique or limited free fall must all carry a fall-arrest rating. Restraint uses a harness and a user-adjustable lanyard or component to stay out of fall positions as the distance to the fall zone changes, but it can fail when the user can still inadvertently reach an edge, misadjusts the lanyard, falls through the surface, a movable platform's support fails, or another foreseeable misuse or failure occurs; the fall-arrest rating covers these. Restraint is suitable where secure footing can be kept without tensioning the lanyard, and despite the fall-arrest requirement it should be used wherever practicable as an extra safety layer.
