An employer must give air-supplied respiratory equipment to an employee who goes into a confined space during an emergency, or performs the emergency procedures there, where the emergency stems from an atmosphere lacking a safe oxygen level or with a harmful contaminant level, or where such an atmosphere is likely to develop while the employee is inside. For emergencies caused by engulfment, or where engulfment is likely, the employer must provide suitable personal protective equipment. The employer must ensure employees use what is provided (s 21).
