Employers and self-employed persons must have emergency procedures for controlling and managing an emergency in the confined space, covering rescue of anyone from the space and first aid inside it and after rescue. The procedures must consider the matters listed in regulations 56(2)(a) to (e), 65 and 66, and be able to be carried out immediately an emergency arises. Risks in carrying them out (such as airborne contaminants, fire, explosion, oxygen deficiency or engulfment) must be eliminated or, if not reasonably practicable, reduced as far as reasonably practicable. Employers must have the relevant employees rehearse the procedures, and the procedures must be carried out immediately when an emergency arises (ss 21, 23, 24).
